Can I Get Help Paying My Property Taxes?

Video Transcript:

Nick: Hey, it’s Nick. Can I sell my house if we still owe taxes or if someone else owes taxes on it and maybe you inherited that property? That’s not a problem. That’s not something that’s going to stop you from being able to sell the property. Now, those taxes that are due, they have to be made good with usually the county before they would allow you to complete the sale.

What does that look like? Well, you do have the option to go and reach out to the county and pay them yourself, but there’s other options. Let’s say you’ve got a hous, that house is worth $50,000, there’s $10,000 owed in taxes. Well, maybe you don’t want to go give someone your $10,000 to make the taxes at a zero balance. So if you sold the house, let’s say you sold it for $50,000, what will happen is, when you sell it, the company that you sign your papers at, the title company, will take that money that is still owed to the county for taxes, and they will give them that, let’s call it the 10,000, and then you get the 40,000 that’s left over from the property.

The big take-homes are one, you don’t need to, you can make that up. As long as the amount of taxes owed aren’t so much more than the value of the property that you would have to sell it for less than the amount, which is rarely the case but does happen. You also don’t have to go out and put all that money out of your own pocket, you can find someone who will buy the house, reach out to them, and then that will get paid at the time that you guys close on the property.

Hope that answers this question. If you got any more around property taxes or things that might help you out with selling the property, feel free to reach out to me. My contact information is at the bottom. Thanks.
